Meet Your Dietitian
Sarah Moore, RDN, CD, CSOWM, CYT
Growing up with two teen parents and without much money made me feel as though I had a lot to earn and a strong need to prove myself. I worked hard training academically as well as with certification programs. Having a formal education was really important to me. But, after years of working in a setting that is steeped in hierarchical roles that separate the patient and clinician I came to see that true healing occurs outside of sterile lights and medical diagnosis.
I prefer to do away with the formal titles of clinician and patient. I want to be more than just your dietitian, I want to be your guide as you become your own health hero.
Not only did I have a drive to prove my worth but I also wanted to learn how to prevent the chronic disease I saw developing in my family of origin. So, what started out as a laundry list of potential metabolic health issues and a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis at the age of 21 has transformed into a lifetime of disease prevention measures.
I will be the first to say making changes to our health habits is not easy and my story was no different. I was contending with food scarcity, a lack of knowledge, emotional eating and an unhealthy relationship with food and I didn’t know how to actually make change happen.
It is time to begin creating a lifetime of healthful memories.
I have created and cultivated an ability to move with people from problem to solution.
This came after years of personal examination, education, working with people who have eating disorders and doing obsessive research into the biology and behaviors that drive food craving and weight management.
I know it is possible to go from feeling stuck in a cycle of ” knowing what to do, but not doing it”, to actually doing it.
It is possible to learn how to truly live a life worth living and not have food get in the way. You can heal your relationship with food. Food is your friend, not your enemy.
I’ve witnessed too many people pass away too early without having healed their food stories. Having experienced significant loss in my life, I know how heart-wrenching it is when it feels like things didn’t have to happen that way. Food is the manna from heaven, it is delicious and you’ve been conditioned by society to believe that food is your enemy. It is not.
I inherited the genes for diabetes, cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure from both sides of my family. And as a child I learned to eat and live like they did, I just followed along with few deviations. In high school you would have found me having a breakfast of snickers and Dr. Pepper. “Hey, at least I’m eating breakfast” would have been my rationale.
It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s did I even realize that I was eating and living in a way that was going to recreate the poor health outcomes of my family and eventually I would have the same health complications that my elders were having if I didn’t change. Fast forward, now I am proud to say that at 40-something years old, I am free of metabolic issues like obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol.
It is possible to use food and lifestyle as medicine, not only to treat disease, but also to prevent disease.
